Forests, mangroves, wetlands, grasslands, peatlands, etc, are all important storage sites of carbon. Flora in these places take up carbon to produce their structure. However, the largest reason why they are important to protect has less to do with storing additional carbon, and more to do with keeping more carbon from leaving the surface. If a forest is cut down, then the carbon that was once stored in the trees is freed up to renter the atmosphere (especially if burned). For this reason, many studies suggest protecting what is left is priority number 1, planting more is priority number 2. Either way, more must be done to allow for plants to be an effective countermeasure against CO2 increases.
